Hog Knowledge

Pigs are monogastrics, which means they have a single-chambered stomach. A well-made mash keeps ingredients evenly mixed and gives them plenty of surface area for digestion. Because when you’ve only got one stomach, you might as well make every bite count!

Take a peek at our selection of pig feeds!

No Teeth? No Problem!

Chickens don’t have teeth, but nature gave them something even better for the job—the gizzard! After a chicken swallows its food, it travels through the digestive system to the gizzard, a strong, muscular organ that works like a built-in food grinder. With the help of grit, the gizzard crushes and grinds grains and other feed into smaller pieces so nutrients can be more easily digested and absorbed.

Who needs teeth when you’ve got a gizzard doing the heavy chewing?

Check out our wide variety of poultry feeds and find what fits your flock best!

Fresh Feed = Happy Animals!

Did you know that proper feed storage can help protect both the quality of your feed and the nutrition your animals depend on? Feed is especially vulnerable to moisture, heat, pests, and contamination. Once moisture gets into a bag or container, it can encourage mold growth and cause feed to spoil much faster.

Store feed in a cool, clean, dry area, preferably in a sealed container that helps keep out rodents, insects, and moisture. Keep bags off the ground and away from damp walls, and avoid areas that experience large temperature swings or excessive humidity.

It’s also a good idea to practice “first in, first out”—use your oldest feed before opening newer bags. And give feed a quick look and smell before feeding. If you notice an unusual odor, moisture, clumping, visible mold, or other signs of spoilage, don't feed it.

Think of feed like food in your own pantry: keep it clean, keep it dry, and don’t let the good stuff go stale!

Goats Aren’t Lawnmowers!

Goats may have a reputation for eating just about anything, but that doesn’t mean anything will do! When grain is appropriate for the goat’s needs, choosing a quality, properly balanced feed can provide concentrated energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals to complement good forage.

Growing goats, breeding animals, and does producing milk can have greater nutritional demands, making the quality and balance of their diet especially important. The goal isn’t simply to fill the feed bucket—it’s to provide nutrition that supports growth, body condition, reproduction, and production.

Because goats might try to eat your fence, but that doesn’t mean you should feed them like it!

  • Gary, the owner, was very friendly and helpful, walked me through the different varieties of feed and knew exactly which one would work best for my chickens. He even offered to show me a tour of the facility, which I eagerly accepted. It was fascinating to see how they make the feed and to learn about the ingredients that are incorporated into it. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a good place to get feed. Whatever you're looking for, this is definitely the place to go! I'll definitely be back!

Why Local Feed Matters

Local feed makes a measurable difference in quality, freshness, and performance. At La Casa Del Grano, we source ingredients from local and regional growers whenever possible and produce feed in small, fresh batches each week.

Because our feed doesn’t travel long distances or sit in warehouses for extended periods, animals receive nutrition that is:

  • Fresher and more nutrient‑intact
  • More consistent in quality
  • Free from unnecessary preservatives

Local production also allows us to maintain strict quality control, respond quickly to seasonal needs, and support the agricultural community we serve. By keeping sourcing and manufacturing close to home, we deliver feed that animals can see, smell, and benefit from — while strengthening local farms and families.

Choosing the Right Protein Level

Selecting the right protein level is essential for supporting healthy growth, performance, and overall condition. Protein needs vary based on an animal’s age, activity level, species, and stage of development — and more is not always better.

At La Casa Del Grano, our feeds are formulated using science‑backed nutritional principles to provide balanced protein levels that support:

  • Muscle development and maintenance
  • Efficient growth and conditioning
  • Consistent performance without unnecessary stress

By matching protein levels to an animal’s specific needs, we help promote optimal utilization of nutrients while avoiding excesses that can impact digestion or performance. Our approach focuses on quality protein sources, not just higher numbers, ensuring animals receive nutrition that works with their bodies — not against them.

Supplement Guide

Supplements are designed to support specific nutritional needs and work best when paired with a balanced feeding program. They are not meant to replace complete feed, but to provide targeted support based on an animal’s age, activity level, and individual goals.

Common reasons supplements may be added include:

  • Supporting joint, muscle, or mobility needs
  • Promoting skin, coat, and overall condition
  • Helping manage stress during training, travel, or competition
  • Filling nutritional gaps during periods of increased demand

At La Casa Del Grano, we focus on science‑backed formulations and quality ingredients to ensure supplements complement — not complicate — a feeding program. Choosing the right supplement starts with understanding your animal’s needs and using products intentionally for consistent, long‑term support.
