Why Essential Oils and Plant Extracts Benefit Your Flock
Small herbs. Big purpose. Discover how thyme, oregano, rosemary, and capsicum fit into poultry nutrition—and what research says about their potential benefits for digestion, antioxidant support, and egg quality.
A productive flock starts with what goes into the feeder. Alongside quality grains, balanced protein, vitamins, and minerals, carefully selected plant ingredients can play a supporting role in poultry nutrition.
At La Casa Del Grano, we use ingredients such as thyme, oregano, capsicum, and rosemary in selected feed formulas. Each serves a purpose. Here is a closer look at these small additions—and what they may mean for your birds and their eggs.
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are concentrated aromatic compounds obtained from plants. In animal nutrition, they belong to a broader group of plant-derived ingredients called phytogenic.
Whole herbs, essential oils, and plant extracts are different preparations. Their effects depend on the ingredients used, their concentration, and how they fit into the complete feed formula.
Thyme & Oregano: Support from Within
Thyme and oregano contain naturally occurring compounds such as thymol and carvacrol that have attracted attention in poultry research.
Studies of specific preparations have reported benefits for intestinal condition and antioxidant defenses. A healthy digestive tract helps birds use the nutrients needed for maintenance, growth, and egg production.
Some laying-hen trials have also found improvements in egg production or certain measures of egg quality. Results vary, however. In one herb-blend study, shell quality improved while egg production remained unchanged.
These ingredients can support a balanced feeding program, but they do not guarantee more eggs.
Rosemary: Antioxidant Support
Rosemary is studied for its antioxidant activity. Antioxidant defenses help the body manage oxidative stress, which occurs when reactive molecules exceed the body’s ability to control them.
A laying-hen study using rosemary herb reported improvements in antioxidant measures and some performance and egg-quality traits.
The form matters: findings for whole rosemary do not automatically apply to every rosemary essential oil or extract.
Capsicum: More Than a Little Spice
Capsicum comes from peppers. Research in meat birds has found that certain capsicum extracts can improve nutrient digestibility and support antioxidant responses under the conditions tested.
For laying hens, the type of pepper ingredient matters. Red pepper ingredients that retain natural pigments can deepen yolk color. A purified extract may not provide those pigments, so capsicum on an ingredient list does not automatically mean a darker yolk.
A deeper-colored yolk also does not, by itself, tell you an egg’s overall nutritional value.
What Does This Mean for Your Eggs?
Research on selected herbs and plant extracts suggests potential support for:
-
Laying performance
-
Shell quality
-
Albumen—or egg white—quality
-
Resistance of yolk fats to oxidation
These are possible responses, not promises for every flock or feed. Results depend on the preparation, feeding rate, overall diet, and the birds themselves.
Strong shells still depend on adequate calcium, available phosphorus, vitamin D, and balanced nutrition. Consistent laying also depends on age, breed, lighting, water, health, and the environment.
Good nutrition works alongside proper egg collection, refrigeration, and food handling.
Purpose in Every Ingredient
At La Casa Del Grano, we manufacture our feed right here in Wapato, Washington, with fresh, premium ingredients and a focus on purposeful nutrition.
Our goal is to bring quality ingredients together in formulas that support birds from within—from the everyday nutrients they require to carefully selected plant ingredients.
Choose a feed suited to your birds’ species and life stage, and follow its feeding directions. Concentrated household essential oils should not be added to feed or drinking water without qualified formulation guidance. These ingredients provide nutritional support rather than treatment for illness.
